How to add grain

Grain adds the texture that makes a digital image read as photographed.

A little noise breaks the steps up and the banding stops being visible.

Grain is most of what separates film from digital to the eye.
Questions
Why would adding noise ever improve an image?
Because smooth gradients compress into visible steps, and the eye is very good at spotting a hard edge in a soft area. A small amount of random noise hides the boundary between steps, and the gradient reads as smooth again. Film and cinema have used this deliberately for decades.
How much should I add?
Less than you think. Around 8 to 15 gives texture without anyone noticing it was added. Above 40 it becomes the point of the picture.
Should I use colour or monochrome grain?
Monochrome for a film look — real film grain is not coloured. Colour noise if you want it to read as a digital photo taken in low light.
Does grain make the file bigger?
Yes, sometimes noticeably. Randomness is the hardest thing for an encoder to compress. Add grain last, after any resizing.

How it works
Every tool here runs on the HTML Canvas API inside your own browser. When you drop a file, it is read straight into memory, changed there, and handed back as a download. Not one byte goes over the network — which is why there is no upload wait, no file size cap, and no way for anyone, including us, to see your images.
That also means the tools keep working with no connection once the page has loaded, and the only limit on file size is your device's memory.
