Questions
How are the initials chosen?
The first letter of the first two words. Type a single word and you get one letter, which often looks better anyway.
What colours work best?
A dark background with light text, or the reverse. Avoid mid-tones for both — the contrast disappears at small sizes, which is exactly where an avatar lives.
Why is round downloaded as PNG?
So the corners outside the circle stay transparent. As a JPG they would come back as a solid square.
What size should I make it?
512 px is comfortable everywhere. Avatars are shown small but screens are sharp, so it pays to supply more than the display size.

How it works
Every tool here runs on the HTML Canvas API inside your own browser. When you drop a file, it is read straight into memory, changed there, and handed back as a download. Not one byte goes over the network — which is why there is no upload wait, no file size cap, and no way for anyone, including us, to see your images.
That also means the tools keep working with no connection once the page has loaded, and the only limit on file size is your device's memory.
