When you need it
Posting a photo taken at home
Phone photos often carry the exact coordinates where they were taken. Stripping them before posting is the single most useful privacy step there is.
Selling something online
Listing photos taken at your address can carry that address inside them.
Sending photos to someone you do not know well
Location, timestamp and device details all travel with the file unless removed.
Questions
What exactly is stored in a photo's metadata?
More than most people expect: the make and model of the camera or phone, the date and time to the second, exposure settings, and on almost every phone the GPS coordinates where the shot was taken — usually accurate to a few metres. Some files also carry a serial number and the name of the software that last edited them.
Do social networks not strip this already?
The large ones usually do, but they read it first. And the moment a photo is sent directly — email, a messaging app, a marketplace listing, a shared drive — the file goes as it is, coordinates included.
How does removing it work?
The image is decoded to raw pixels and re-encoded as a fresh file. Metadata lives alongside the pixels rather than inside them, so redrawing the image leaves it behind. Nothing has to be found and deleted; it simply is not carried over.
Does it change how the photo looks?
Not visibly. The pixels are drawn again and re-encoded at high quality. One thing does change: the orientation tag goes with the rest, so a photo relying on that tag to display upright may need rotating afterwards.
Can the metadata be recovered from the cleaned file?
No. It is not hidden or flagged, it is absent — the new file was built without it.
Is my photo uploaded to be cleaned?
No, and that would rather defeat the point. The whole operation happens in your browser.

How it works
Every tool here runs on the HTML Canvas API inside your own browser. When you drop a file, it is read straight into memory, changed there, and handed back as a download. Not one byte goes over the network — which is why there is no upload wait, no file size cap, and no way for anyone, including us, to see your images.
That also means the tools keep working with no connection once the page has loaded, and the only limit on file size is your device's memory.
