Questions
Why does the download have to be a PNG?
Because JPG cannot store transparency. Saved as JPG, the corners outside the circle would come out solid black or white and you would have a square again. PNG keeps them empty, which is what makes the circle a circle.
What part of my photo gets kept?
The largest square that fits in the centre, and then a circle inside that. If the subject is off to one side, crop it closer to centre first with crop image, then come back.
What size should a profile picture be?
512 px is comfortable almost everywhere — large enough for high-resolution screens, small enough to upload quickly. Go to 1024 px if the image will also be shown large somewhere.
My avatar disappears on a dark background. What can I do?
Add a ring. A light ring separates a dark image from a dark background, and a dark ring does the reverse. A few percent is enough.
Will it work with a logo that already has a transparent background?
Yes, and the transparency is kept. The circle is cut in addition to what is already transparent, not instead of it.

How it works
Every tool here runs on the HTML Canvas API inside your own browser. When you drop a file, it is read straight into memory, changed there, and handed back as a download. Not one byte goes over the network — which is why there is no upload wait, no file size cap, and no way for anyone, including us, to see your images.
That also means the tools keep working with no connection once the page has loaded, and the only limit on file size is your device's memory.
